Gladstone is a Northland city of long-time residents. The Census Bureau’s QuickFacts page puts people 65 and older at about 20.5 percent of the population, roughly one in five. That is higher than Lee’s Summit, higher than Raymore, and well above the national share. If you live in Gladstone, Medicare is not an abstract topic. It is your neighbors, your church, your coffee group.
Here is a plain roadmap built for Gladstone and the surrounding Northland.
What a senior-heavy city means for you
Living where many people have Medicare has real upsides. Local doctors and clinics are used to Medicare patients. There are more peers to compare notes with. Senior centers and libraries host Medicare help sessions in the fall.
It has one downside. Scammers go where the seniors are, and calls from people claiming to be “from Medicare” are common. We cover that below.
Step 1: Get the timing right
If you are turning 65, your Initial Enrollment Period lasts seven months, starting three months before your birthday month. If you are already on Medicare, the dates that matter each year are:
- October 15 to December 7: Open Enrollment. Change Medicare Advantage or Part D plans for the coming year.
- January 1 to March 31: If you are in a Medicare Advantage plan, one more chance to switch or return to Original Medicare.
- Your Medigap anniversary date: Missouri’s yearly window to switch Supplement companies (see Step 3).
Write all three on the calendar. Our enrollment periods page lists the rest.
Step 2: Check your hospital network every fall
This is the big one for the Northland. NKC Health, which runs North Kansas City Hospital and the Meritas Health clinics, is the hospital system most Gladstone residents use. In 2026, NKC Health ended its contract with Cigna Medicare Advantage plans and then went out of network for UnitedHealthcare Medicare Advantage plans on October 1, 2026. NKC Health says it will accept Original Medicare, Humana Medicare Advantage and Medicare Supplement plans in 2027. Source: NKC Health, page updated August 2026.
If you are on a Medicare Advantage plan and you use North Kansas City Hospital or a Meritas doctor, confirm your plan’s 2027 network before December 7. Do not rely on last year. Other Northland hospitals, such as Saint Luke’s North on Barry Road, have their own contracts, and those can change too. Networks change every year, and we check them for you. See your doctors and hospitals.
If you have Original Medicare with a Supplement, there is no network to check. Any hospital that accepts Medicare works.
Step 3: Use the Missouri anniversary rule
Gladstone is in Missouri. Missouri’s Medicare supplement regulation gives Medigap holders a yearly protection most states lack. Within 30 days before or after your policy anniversary, you can move to the same plan letter with a different company. The new company must accept you without health questions.
Since every Plan G is the same Plan G, this lets you compare prices once a year without health questions. Some people have held the same policy for years without comparing. If that is you, find your anniversary date and ask us to look. If your current company is still a good deal, we will say so. Details on Missouri vs Kansas.
Step 4: Know the scam patterns
Medicare will never call you to sell you anything or visit your home. If a caller asks for your Medicare number to “verify” something, hang up. If you are worried, call 1-800-MEDICARE (1-800-633-4227) yourself.
Missouri’s Senior Medicare Patrol, at 888-515-6565, helps people report scams and sort out claims they did not make. It is free. Our article on Medicare scams covers the common patterns, and they look the same in Gladstone as they do in Cass County.
Step 5: Review your medicines
Part D drug lists change every year. A medicine covered at a low tier this year can move up or drop off next year. Each fall, check every medicine and dose, and your pharmacy, against your plan’s list for the coming year. If you have Medicare Advantage with drug coverage built in, the same check applies. See our Part D page.
Step 6: Look at the whole cost, not the premium
Whether you lean toward a Supplement or Medicare Advantage, compare what a plan would cost in a bad year, not just in a good one. Premium, deductible, copays and the out-of-pocket limit all count. Our Medicare costs page has the current Medicare figures.
A roadmap on one page
